Keyword Search Engines and How They Work
Automated programs known as spiders are used for search engines to search the Web and build the databases for those search engines. The analyzed data is then added to the search engine’s index. When you query a search engine the index is checked and the closest related URLs are returned as hits, listing the most likely or best result first.
The most common type of search on the Web is the Keyword Search. Unless the author of the page or document actually specifies the keywords through the use of tags (Meta Tags) the search engine will determine the key words itself. Depending on the search engine, sometimes all words in a document are indexed, but it’s more likely that only partial documents are indexed.
Keyword search engines do have a difficult time when it comes to telling the difference between words that have different meanings, depending on how they are used, but are spelled the same.
Most search engines have an Advanced Search as well as a basic search. Advanced options sometimes differ from search engine to search engine but still allow you to refine your search in manner that will return the document(s) you need. There are some search engine that will allow you to refine your search even further by the use of terms such as AND, OR and NOT. These are known as Boolean operators in the business. Many search engines are now storing the Meta tags, mentioned earlier, in header search records giving the author more flexibility in determining what keywords will produce results containing their document. Some unethical authors will try to use other companies’ trademarks in their Meta tags but the search engines are pretty efficient at weeding these cheaters out
Relevancy rankings are the manner in which search engine return results from the keyword search. For instance, if you are searching on the word, “ulcers” and if that word appears in a document numerous times it is logically sound that a document will contain information that is useful to the searcher.
However if your keyword is ambiguous or has multiple meanings and usage the chances are that the search will return irrelevant document hits.
Relevancy is critical to the searcher, so the Advanced Search option becomes important. This fact makes it necessary for the searcher to perfect his keyword search skills. This takes practice but is critical if you want to become more efficient in your job and skills and increase the relevancy of the documents returned to you from your keyword searches.
That’s where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes in: SEO helps ensure your site is more visible in the search engines, drive qualified traffic to your website, and convert that traffic into actual customers.
Getting good rankings in the Baidu search engine is not an easy task if you are accustomed to working with Western search engines such as Google US.
